Visitors to Corfu, who have been to other areas of Greece, will be surprised to see different food on
the menus.
This is partly due to the Venetian influence, pasta playing
a large role in the Corfiot dishes.
Tavernas (restaurants) serve standard Greek food,
but many include Corfiot specialities on their menus
Keftedes - Traditional Ionian meatballs made from fresh mince
Pastitsada - Chunks of meat slowly cooked in a tomato and onion
sauce and served with pasta. You can find this made with beef,
chicken or even cockerel!
Pastichio - An oven baked dish similar to lasagne. Mincemeat in
a tomato sauce is mixed with pasta and topped with a bechamel
sauce
Gouvetsi - Lamb or beef in a tomato sauce with small seed pasta
baked in the oven
Sofrito - Veal cooked slowly in a fragrant garlic sauce
Stifado - Beef and small sweet onion stew in a red sauce - this
is sometimes cooked with rabbit
Bourdeto - Fish served in a spicy red sauce
Bianco - Fish and potatoes served in a white sauce
